Blog Post # 8: Google
Drive
My experience with Google Drive was
limited to working on a document and to saving my photos. I knew I could share
and edit a document online while other people edited as well. That was what we
learned in a class and I never thought about using it again. Now that I’ve seen
the video, I learned that many things can be done: documents, spread sheets,
surveys, and presentations.
My first idea for using Google
Drive would be to use Google Docs. I would use it for my classes especially
when I have to work in a team and we all have busy schedules and can’t meet.
This way we are all able to access the document from wherever is convenient for
us. This way we can all add, remove, and edit the document online. I find this very useful because as graduate
students we can all access the document when we have time.
My second idea would be used with
students in the third grade. I would have the students use Google Forms for a
Math lesson. I would have the student get in groups of four. Then I would have
them use Google Forms to create a survey so that they could post it in their
blogs and have their classmates answer them. Then I would have each team view
their answers and create a graph showing all the answers they received.
Finally, I would have them answer questions based on the results.
My third idea would be to use
Google Drive with 4th grade students for Science. I would have the
students create a Google account. Then I would create a folder with the
information, notes, presentations, and lessons of the entire year. I would then
share this folder with my students so that they can access them from home
especially to review for a test. This can also be used for any other subject or
content area depending on what is being taught.
Another idea would be to use Google
My Maps. This idea can be used for 2nd graders in Math. In this case, I would
create a math addition problem where they could use the map and find the sum of
miles from one place to another. This would just show a visual and let them
know how far it is. Google My Maps is nice because it tells you the miles from
one place to the other.
Google
Drive is a great tool for teachers and students. It lets us do many things and
save our documents without occupying your available space. This is a great
resource to be used with upper grade levels they just need to be taught how to
use the different programs.
Claudia,
ReplyDeleteI was a third grade teacher for 15 years and I know that it is a difficult year full of foundational concepts. I love that you are willing to try new technology strategies in your classroom in math and science. This is the way of the future. Your idea with the math problems is wonderful. I can almost see the excitement that the students would have working in groups and on the computer. You must be an awesome teacher!

Dear Claudia,
ReplyDeleteYour ideas sounds great. While reading I was imaging how teams might collaborate and get their results immediately. Students wants to participate in different way from old school has taught. They explore and want to learn more and more about technology. Since, it is very difficult to catch their attentions some times, using technology in class room is really great.
Thanks,
Maria
Claudia,
ReplyDeleteI loved your idea of using google my maps for 2nd grade math. This is my first year teaching 2nd grade and that turned out to be a great idea. I also agree with you google doc is very convenient for graduate students. I love that we are all able to work at the document at the same time or at our own pace. This alleviates all the group meetings.
Hello Claudia,
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting how a lot of us have a commonality in that we have been using google drive, however we were missing a great deal of other extensions such as spreadsheets and forms to mention a few. The tutorial are a great tool to have a better understanding of the many benefits the drive offer. I really loved the ideas you offered to incorporate the drive in the classroom. It is also as you mention a great tool to edit online. This feature allows for the perfect collaboration in any given setting specially when it is hard to meet physically the drive allows the shared document to be edited by all parties. Thank you Claudia for your great ideas
Hi Claudia, when we hear the word google the first thing that comes into our minds is just a place to look for information but google docs is full of tools that we can use in the classroom. I agree with you creating surveys will help teachers determine the level of understanding of students.
ReplyDeleteHello Claudia,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your map ideas where students would measure the miles between two places. This is a very creative idea and integrates math and geography. Students are eager to learn with activities like these, and I really believe students internalize more information when exposed to it in creative ways. The science notes idea is also great. It allows students to become familiar with note taking for college and even reflect on what information they wrote down. Is it something they used or did they just write unnecessary information. Thank you for sharing your ideas.

Hello Claudia,
ReplyDeleteI think that Google Drive is extremely effective in fact I found myself using it more than I do microsoft products. I have more access to google apps because of my phone and tablet. I even was able to track my assignments and ensure they were submitted correctly because i checked them on my phone with google docs and slides. Students will be eager to learn with these technologies because they are easy to learn, and very fun as well.
