Edmodo is a social media site similar to Facebook that allows the community to share files and communicate with. The teacher can post reminders, which comes very handy especially if you forget to send notes home. This site also lets you create quizzes, assignments, polls, notes, and snapshots. I had not heard of this site but I know it will be extremely useful once I start utilizing it in my classroom.
The first idea I have for using Edmodo is to communicate with the parents in my kindergarten class, especially when I need to send reminders. Sometimes I am in such a hurry that I forget to pass out the notes reminding them of some event that is going on. Edmodo can help me remind the parents about any events going on.  These reminders could be sent weekly so that parents are informed of what is going on in the classroom.
Another way I would use Edmodo would be to create snapshots for my class. In this case, I would use it with third graders in Language Arts. This would be a great way to assess what standards my students still need help with. In this case, I would have them take one snapshot per week, after we have covered those standards for the week.
Since Edmodo is similar to Facebook, I would have 4th grade students sign up and post questions for Language Arts. Students would be read a book or chapter in a book, then they would be asked to post a question. This question could be about anything they wanted to analyze: the characters, his motives for doing something, an alternate ending, etc. Then they would all have to post a comment on at least two questions. Students could also post comments about something they learned that they found interesting.
Edmodo is also another option to stay in contact and share information with colleagues. We could share ideas, lessons, and files. This collaboration is neat because I can work with my colleague when planning what are the Texas standards that we need to cover for the week. This would be a good way to maintain the communication and work on the lesson plan when it is convenient for both of us. It reminds me of Google Docs.
Edmodo is a useful tool for the community. It is a great way to maintain communication with the students, parents, and other colleagues. Many things can be done with Edmodo and even though in my current grade level I can’t give my students Snapshots, I would use it if I were teaching 3rd, 4th, or 5th.

  1. Claudia,
I liked your idea about the reading for language arts. Our Elementary Student Council has a book club and they would be thrilled to use your idea. They do similar things, but I like the idea of them posting questions to their peers. Often times a student will see things in a different light and even though they might not understand what the teacher is asking, they might "get it" from another student. Great post!

  2. Hello Claudia,
Edmodo is definitely a media to use with students in elementary and on. This platform allows not only to collaborate but to assess and monitor the progress of your students. I really liked the fact that parents are part of it as well. The fact that parents are involved and can also monitor the progress of the child aids in extending the learning at home. I was very excited to learn about Edmodo because the entire learning process is very engaging. Students are more open to work with technology than paper pencil. Edmodo also allows for many assignments, reflections, and a lot more. Thank you for sharing all your ideas

  3. Hi Claudia, I think that using Edmodo for your Kindergarten students is a great idea. I know how difficult it is to try to get information flyers out to parents especially in the lower grades. Sometimes, even if you get them all passed out they don't always make it home because some of the students go to daycare or their grandparents house after school. Weekly postings on Edmodo would definitely benefit parents. I also like your idea about using Edmodo with fourth grade students for language arts. I think that having a discussion about the readings they are doing would definitely help to increase their interest in reading.

  4. Hi Claudia:

Yes, Edmodo is an excellent resource to communicate with parents. We can create parents accounts to invite parents to join the class on Edmodo. Parent Accounts provide parents with the ability to view their child’s activities, assignments and events, and communicated directly with their teacher and their child. In addition, we can concentrate common and general information to all parents such as events and class projects in some kind of a weekly parent newsletter.

  5. Hello Claudia,
I do like the idea of using edmodo to communicate with colleagues. There is never enough time during the day to share ideas and plan with our grade level. Edmodo provides the collaborating piece that saves us even more time. Any tool that allows educators to increase communication between parents and teachers has high demand. Great job! Thank you for sharing.
