Blog Post 4: Uses for Evernote

Evernote is more than a tool for taking notes. It is a place to keep information whether recorded or typed that can be shared with others. It can also include pictures, screenshots, articles, and other information that can be edited by people you share it with if desired. I enjoyed using Evernote and I think older students would benefit from using this tool.
I would use Evernote in the 4th grade in the subject area of Language Arts. Since this is a great tool for creating notes and saving them. I would have my students write narratives or short compositions. Then I would ask them to record themselves reading their work. I would have them save these compositions in the same notebook so that it could be a digital portfolio of their work throughout the year. This is a great way to show the students’ progress in writing stories.
Another idea for using Evernote, would be for 5th graders. For Math, I would give them a word problem as a pdf file. I would then ask them to solve their problem and ask them to record how they found their answer. As an article mentioned it is important for students to explain the logic behind their answer whether it’s right or wrong. I think this would be a great tool for students to explain their reasoning. This would be a way for them to explain step by step how they solved their word problems.
My third idea would be used in a dual language 3rd grade classroom, in Spanish Language Arts and English Language Arts. Students in dual language are learning both languages so I would have the students create notes every day. One would be in English and the other one in Spanish. This would be their journal. I would give them a topic and have them write about it for 15 minutes. Students would then be required to share their note with a partner so that they can edit their work.
As a teacher, I would use Evernote as my place to store the lesson plans for the academic school year. This would be a great resource because I could write down the lesson plan. After my students are done with the activity, I would post some samples of their work. I would also reflect about how smooth the lesson went and record modifications, reminders, or misconceptions that need to be addressed for the next year.
I loved using Evernote, I found it very useful and easy to use after I watched the video Up and Running with Evernote. I like that you can create so many notes, include photos, audio, and share everything. This is a tool that I will continue to use because I can use it to save pictures of my baby too.

  1. Claudia,
Thank you for your kind comment about my blog. I read both of your entries and loved your kinder lessons! I am sure that you are an amazing teacher and I admire your calling for kindergarten. Your math idea about a problem to solve was very creative as well. Having a child use their words to explain how they derived an answer is such an important element. This is so true for life as well. We can come up with the answer to a solution, but it is important to know the why as well.

    Blessings,
    Linda

  2. Hi Claudia,
I am learning too much reading blogs from my classmates like you that share specific ideas about how to use tools/apps like Evernote in different educational levels. While I was reading your blog, I was remembering my classes and I can see the big different from those days (years) and today. Undoubtedly, current technology can help us to improve several things, and the way we Teach/learn too. In addition, like Linda, I also enjoyed your notes and ideas using Evernote to Kindergarten. I have one baby and one toddler and I am going to use them for teach them.

    Thanks a lot,
    Maria

  3. Hello Claudia,
This course has provided not only the learning about platforms but also the hands on. In my opinion it is the best way to learn rather than writing research papers about technology. I loved the ideas you provided about applying this tool in your classroom and I can visualize how engaging the activities can be. Not only will the students target the content areas but they would be growing in the area of technology. Thank you for your reflection

  4. Claudia,

I love your idea about having fourth graders record themselves reading their compositions. Hearing their writings is important because they can hear if their writing flows. I also liked your idea of having dual language students keep notebooks in Spanish and English. They would be good portfolios for them to see their progress as they learn more throughout the school year. Thank you for sharing.

  5. Hi Claudia, I agree with Evernote is more than just a tool to make notes. We can keep our information safe and organized. We can add any picture, screenshot, article and share with students and even parents. I also enjoyed watching the video Up and running with Evernote. The good thing about Evernote is the safety that it offers.

  6. Hello Claudia,
I really liked your ideas about the using evernote in Language Arts with your writing pieces. I can see how your students would benefit from writing their short compositions and record themselves reading. This will also improve their fluency. The math idea is great also. Students retain more information when they get to practice and what better way than working out solutions to their problems and even sharing with classmates. Great ideas!
